Frequently Asked Questions
How many hours of mentoring do I need to do?
Program participants require a minimum of 15 hours of relevant industry based mentoring.
How will the mentoring be delivered?
The delivery mode is face-to-face, one-to-one, but may also consist of phone calls and emails.
Where does the mentoring take place?
Mentoring should take place in a quiet, neutral, public location such as a local library, coffee shop, or park.
How many hours of mentoring do I need to provide per week?
As many hours as you can volunteer. We understand that many volunteer mentors have other commitments; therefore, it is up to the mentor and program participant to determine when, where and how often the mentoring sessions will occur. You will both sign a mentoring agreement in your first session.
Is there any training provided by the College?
Yes. Training will be provided for all successful applicants. The training will be delivered online, making it easy for our volunteers to access from home at their convenience. Training will take no longer than 3 hours. Go to http://getskilled.sydneycommunitycollege.com.au/volunteer-mentors/mentor-me to find out more.
Can I continue to mentor once I reach 15 hours?
Yes. Volunteers can continue their mentoring relationship for as long as they feel their assistance is needed. However, we aim to provide mentoring to over 200 participants by 31 December 2011, so should you be happy to continue offering your services, we would recommend mentoring other participants.
What’s the next step once I have registered my interest online?
You will be contacted by the Program Coordinator to schedule a face to face interview. Please note that it may take 1-2 weeks before you are contacted. The interview will be conducted somewhere convenient to your home or work and will take around half an hour.
What is the aim of the mentoring?
To provide newly arrived skilled migrants with information about their relevant industries. Mentors will be matched with migrants who are seeking employment in their industry and will share their knowledge and experience with them.
