VOLUNTEER MENTOR PROGRAM
Volunteer Mentors are local professional people who help provide support, advice and direction to skilled migrants who are enrolled in our Skilled Migrant or Skilled Refugee Mentoring Programs.
The Skilled Migrant Mentoring Program (SMMP) aims to support skilled migrants who are unable to find employment appropriate to their experience and qualifications.
Each client enrolled in the Skilled Migrant Mentoring Program receives a range of services including assistance from a mentor who is a professional working in the same vocational area of expertise. Go here to find out more about the Skilled Migrant Mentoring Program.
The Skilled Refugee Mentoring Program is a pilot program which aims to provide one-on-one mentoring for skilled refugees who require guidance and support in engaging in employment and finding a job which is appropriate to their skills.
What is mentoring?
Mentoring is an alliance of two people which creates a space for dialogue that results in reflection, action and learning for both.
A mentor is a person who will listen and give information, advice and counsel when requested.
Mentoring a skilled migrant or refugee is about:
- Supporting them in a transition and helping them to assimilate into a new environment by acting as a source of information and insight
- Counselling them regarding career development or strategies for achieving professional goals
- Teaching specific skills such as interview techniques or resume development
- Facilitating self directed learning that will assist them to find appropriate employment
Who can help?
We have particular need for volunteer mentors who:
- are accountants, auditors or working in the financial services area
- are qualified engineers, of all disciplines
- are IT Professionals
In addition, we need a small amount of mentors from a diverse group of other skills, such as marketing professionals, human resources specialists, doctors, project managers and high level administrative/management professionals.
If you have mentoring/teaching/or human resources experience, particularly with refugees or people from diverse backgrounds, you may be able to help someone from our Refugee Mentoring Program.
